Men's Volleyball: Eagles Drop Pair in Invitational And Season Openers

Ryan Howdeshell combined for 14 kills, 20 assists, and 19 digs during Saturday's pair of season openers.

Nashua, N.H. – Host Daniel Webster opened its 2015 campaign dropping a pair of non-conference matchups to Johnson & Wales and sixth-ranked Kean by identical 3-0 scores Saturday afternoon at Mario Vagge Gymnasium as part of the "Live Free or Die" Invitational hosted in conjunction with Rivier.

Johnson & Wales (8-1) posted a 26-24, 25-21, 25-16 decision over DWC in the opener of the day's three matches and followed with a 25-18, 25-23, 27-25 sweep of Endicott (1-4) in the day's middle match.

Kean (6-0) closed the day posting set scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-21 over the host Eagles (0-2) after besting host Rivier, 3-2 earlier in the day.

In the opener, Ryan Kennedy led the Wildcats with a match-best 11 kills and hit .409 (11-2-22) while Kyle MacKnight added seven kills and Kyle Eva knocked down six. J.J. Bessette handed out 31 assists.

JWU hit .162 as a team and posted advantages in total kills (37-27), assists (34-22), aces (5-2) and digs (40-34).

DWC, which hit .126, was paced by nine kills from Charlie Hendrix (Kane'ohe, Haw.) while Ryan Howdeshell (Fairbanks, Alaska) added seven and Tommy Reyes (Providence, R.I.) notched six kills with 11 assists.

Johnson & Wales 3, Endicott 0

Brendan Baker was the high man for the Wildcats, posting a match-best 14 kills and hit .429) (14-2-29) while Kennedy picked up eight kills and Eva posted six. Bessette dished out 32 assists and pulled in a team-high nine digs.

John Osborne led Endicott with 11 kills and 13 digs, while Dan Seaver posted eight kills and Daniel Toth registered seven. Stewart Allendorph chipped in with 11 digs and Troy Riorden posted 18 assists.

The sixth-ranked Cougars hit .262 overall while DWC managed .102 and topped the Eagles in total kills (43-28), assists (41-23), and digs (46-37).

Reyes posted a match-best 11 kills for DWC and hit .409 (11-2-22) adding eight digs, while Howdeshell notched seven kills, 11 assists and 13 digs, and Hendrix picked up six kills.

Jacob Kauffman led Kean with 10 kills and added nine digs, while Bez Arslani and Bill Fischer added eight kills apiece. John Cunningham posted 10 digs while Ron Dunn finished with 15 assists.

DWC continues action on Sunday hosting Lasell at 1:00 p.m. Johnson & Wales tangles with Newbury in the day's early meeting at 11:00 a.m.
