Men's Volleyball: Eagles Drop NECC Opener At Newbury, 3-1

BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Newbury College men's volleyball team opened up New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action with a 3-1 victory over Daniel Webster College, Saturday morning. Senior outside hitter Danny Tiner (Salem, N.H.) paved the way to the win notching a 14 kills on 33 assists with just three errors for a solid .303 attack percentage.

Newbury came out of the gate strong jumping out to the quick, 1-0, match lead taking the first set, 25-18. First year outside hitter Joshua Thorne (Oxford, Conn.) hit .429 while notching four kills on seven attempts with just one miscue. Sophomore middle blocker Nile Fox (Hampton, Va.) was nearly flawless from the floor with two kills on three attempts.

However, the Eagles came back to tie up the match at 1-1, edging out the Nighthawks 25-23 in game two. Senior middle blocker Joel Hendrix (Kane'ohe, Hawaii) dominated the net, tallying five kills on 10 attempts while registering two total blocks – one solo and one assisted – on the defensive side.

Tiner came alive in the third set as the Nighthawks put their foot down in the third set. The New Hampshire native was flawless from floor, recording seven kills on 12 attempts for a staggering .583 attack percentage. Thorne followed up with five kills as the Nighthawks squeaked out the barn-burning third set, 32-30. 

The Nighthawks fell down early in the fourth set as the Eagles jumped out to an early 6-2 advantage but the lead was short lived. Trailing by two, 9-7, first year middle hitter Wade Robidoux (Agawam, Mass.) ignited a 7-0 run with one service ace to take a 14-0 lead as the Nighthawks did not look back as they  claimed the match with a 25-14 victory in game four.

Newbury opens NECC action at 1-0 and improve to 2-5 overall while Daniel Webster falls to 0-4 and 0-1 in t NECC. The Nighthawks return to the hard-court Monday evening when they travel to Cambridge, Mass. For an 8:00 p.m. tilt against Lesley University. The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday February 17th when they go on the road against Elms College at 7:00 p.m.
