Nashua, NH - Rookie Saunoa Afoa (Las Vegas, Nev.) registered a match-high 12 kills and added three total blocks and Ryan Howdeshell (Fairbanks, Alaska) hit .500 with 11 kills and knocked down four aces guiding host Daniel Webster past Regis, 3-0 in the New England Collegiate Conference openers for both clubs Tuesday night at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.
The host Eagles (6-7, 1-0 NECC) hit .303 as a team and topped the Pride (0-7, 0-1) for the 11th time in 13 all-time meetings with set scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-19. The Eagles also surpassed last year's wins total (5).
Nate Makaiwi (Las Vegas, Nev.) dished out 27 assists and pulled in seven digs for the winners, while Tommy Reyes (Providence, R.I.) chipped in with five kills and match-high eight digs.
Brett Krahl (Santa Clarita, Cal.) and DJ Lyons (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led Regis with eight kills. Krahl hit .571 adding a pair of blocks while Drew Beimel (Redondo Beach, Cal.) added six kills and Sean Bisnette (Oxnard, Cal.) picked up five. Joe Hanrahan (Coventry, R.I.) finished with 30 assists.
DWC finished with a 38-33 advantage in total kills (38-33), assists (34-31), digs (34-29), aces (12-2) and total blocks (8-5).
Regis finished hitting .196 overall.
DWC never trailed in the opening set, hitting .241 led by five kills from Afoa while Krahl posted four kills for Regis but the Pride hit just .061.
DWC hit .344 in the second with Afoa, Reyes and Howdeshell all posting three kills apiece but Regis stayed close, forging nine ties and led twice but DWC closed it out with a 7-3 ending on a Richard Iturralde Zavalza (Tucson, Ariz.) ace.
DWC trailed only once in the third, hitting .321 as Howdeshell went off hitting 7-0-10 with a pair of aces. Regis also hit their best of the night (.385) with Lyons going 6-8 on the attack but DWC never led Regis closer than six points down the stretch and ended it on Afoa's final kill of the night.
DWC is off until next Wednesday when they visit Lesley for a NECC matchup at 8:00 p.m. which begins a four-game road trip. The Eagles return home on February 24th to face Elms.
Regis hosts Newbury in NECC action on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
