Men's Volleyball: Eagles Edge Sage To Earn Split, Tie Season Win Mark

Springfield, MA - Saunoa Afoa posted a team high 22 kills and Ryan Howdeshell added 13 as Daniel Webster outlasted Sage College, 3-2 to earn a Saturday split after falling to second-ranked Springfield in a regional trimatch.

With the win over the Gators, DWC (15-10) tied the program's all-time win record in a season. The Eagles program posted a 15-13 overall mark in 2013.

Set scores against Sage were 25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 22-25 and 15-8.

Richmond Iturralde Zavalza added eight kills and five digs for the Eagles and Darrien Mason posted eight kills and four blocks. NJ Makaiwi had 42 assists and 16 digs.

DWC survived despite the Gators (13-16) finishing with advantages in all major statistical categories. DWC's key was the fifth set in which the squad combined to hit .500 (11-2-18) while Sage was just .200 (5-2-15).

In DWC's earlier match against the second-ranked Pride, Afoa was the high man with eight kills while Howdeshell picked up seven.

Springfield hit an unconscious .625 (36-6-48) while DWC managed .059. Springfield trailed just twice through the match and won with set scores of 25-12, 25-16, 25-19.

DWC, which remains tied for first in the NECC at 7-1, is off until Tuesday night when they visit Regis for a NECC matchup at 7:00 p.m. and close their regular season next Saturday against Endicott in a NECC matchup at 7:00 p.m.
