Women's Basketball: Murphy Notches 17 In Homecoming As Eagles Forge Past SVC, 79-65

BENNINGTON, VT – The Daniel Webster College Eagles built a 16-point halftime lead and were able to hold on in the second half and defeat the Southern Vermont College Mountaineers 79-65 on Tuesday Evening.

Four different players were able to score in double figures for the Eagles, who were led by a strong 17 point performance from Kirsten MurphySarah Paternostro added 16 and dished out eight assists, and Alycia Gervais recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.  Alyssa Marson also added 15 for the Eagles behind three 3-pointers. 

The Mountaineers were led by Kourtney Hewitt who had 16 points behind 7-11 shooting.  Ashliy Veliz recorded a double-double for the Mountaineers with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Southern Vermont built a big hole in the first half and trailed 39-23 at the break.  The Mountaineers used some strong man to man defense and a couple of 3-pointers to fight their way back into the game and at one point trailed by only eight with 6:33 remaining.  The Eagles however, stepped up their half court defensive pressure and were able to add to their lead and hold on for the 79-65 win.

Now 7-1 over their last eight, Daniel Webster improves to 12-6 overall and 8-3 in the NECC.  With the loss the Mountaineers fall to 6-13 and 5-7 in the NECC.  Daniel Webster will be in action next on February 2nd when they travel to Elms for another NECC matchup.  Tipoff is set for 6:00pm.  Southern Vermont is also in action next on February 2nd when they face Regis who is currently on top of the NECC.  Tipoff is set for 5:30pm.
